ABC casts doubt on Gaza’s starvation deaths in its coverage of Israel’s genocide
I am writing to express deep concern about your July 22 headline: “15 dead, including 4 children, of malnutrition in Gaza over the past 24 hours, Hamas-run ministry says.” This framing dehumanizes a catastrophic reality and undermines your own standards for accuracy and fairness.
The phrase “Hamas-run ministry” is repeated unnecessarily, attempting to cast doubt on hospital-reported deaths without offering alternate sources. Major outlets including Reuters and Al Jazeera have reported that 101 people, including 80 children, have died of starvation in Gaza. Yet ABC’s framing treats these deaths as suspect. When Israeli sources make claims, they are rarely framed with such skepticism. Why the double standard?
This approach erases the suffering of Gaza’s starving civilians and dismisses the legitimacy of Palestinian lives. Independent bodies like the UN and Human Rights Watch have documented Israel’s use of starvation as a weapon of war.
ABC’s editorial standards stress impartiality and accountability. This story fails both. I urge your editors to revise the headline, cite broader sources, and stop using language that discredits Palestinian health authorities by default.
Starving children deserve truth—not a headline that casts doubt on a catastrophe.
