BBC censors Kneecap from Glastonbury live stream over Gaza stance

The BBC’s refusal to livestream Kneecap’s Glastonbury set—while vaguely stating it “might” appear on iPlayer—is blatant political censorship. It silenced an artistic group known for pro-Palestinian solidarity, amid Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza.

In “Why the BBC doesn’t call Hamas militants ‘terrorists’” (11 October 2023), John Simpson wrote: “Our business is to present our audiences with the facts, and let them make up their own minds.” Yet the BBC made that decision for viewers. Kneecap are not convicted of any crime. Preemptively censoring them violates your Editorial Guidelines on impartiality and fairness.

This action also breaches Ofcom’s Broadcasting Code, which demands political balance and protects freedom of expression. If the performance is safe for iPlayer, it was safe for live broadcast. The editorial inconsistency reflects pressure—not principle.

I call on the BBC to:
– Feature Kneecap’s full set unedited and prominently on iPlayer
– Issue a public apology to Kneecap for political censorship
– Make a public commitment to platform political performers impartially and equally

Publicly censoring artists over their Gaza stance is not neutrality—it’s complicity. The BBC must correct this failure transparently.
