Challenging misinformation and bias on Middle East issues in the UK Press

BBC launders pro-Israel narratives in its coverage of Israel’s genocide in Gaza

I am writing about your article originally headlined “Lawyers warn Starmer recognising Palestinian state could break international law.” This headline falsely implied that recognising a Palestinian state is legally dubious—when in fact it is supported by the majority of the international community. The framing itself criminalises Palestinian statehood and reinforces a narrative that undermines Palestinian rights.

Though the headline was later changed, the damage remains. It helped legitimise fringe legal arguments from UK Lawyers for Israel (UKLFI)—a group with ties to the Israeli government—without disclosing their political role. As openDemocracy reports, UKLFI defends illegal settlements and Israeli state interests. Yet the BBC calls its affiliates “top lawyers” and fails to label them as pro-Israel—while routinely branding Palestinian institutions as “Hamas-run.”

This double standard dehumanises Palestinians and hides bias behind legal language. Over 800 legal experts, including former UK justices, have warned Israel is committing genocide. Their views were sidelined. Even the UK government dismissed UKLFI’s framing as “missing the point.”

This violates BBC Editorial Guidelines and Ofcom’s standards on impartiality and harm. I urge your team to issue a correction disclosing UKLFI’s affiliations. If Palestinian sources must be flagged as “Hamas-run” in the name of transparency, why is “pro-Israel lawyers” not the bare minimum qualifier?
