BBC legitimises Israel’s genocide in Gaza through distorted, state-led reporting

I am filing a formal complaint regarding the BBC article “Inside Gaza, BBC sees total devastation after two years of war”, which breaches the BBC Editorial Guidelines on Accuracy (3.1, 3.3.3) and Impartiality (4.1, 4.4.2), as well as OFCOM’s Broadcasting Code on Due Accuracy, Due Impartiality, and Harm and Offence (Sections 2 and 5).

The report is based solely on an IDF-controlled visit, with no independent access or Palestinian voices. It repeats Israeli military claims—such as the destruction being necessary to “combat terrorists”—without scrutiny, reinforcing state propaganda while obscuring mass civilian harm. The sentence “68,000 Gazans have been killed, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry” uses passive voice to hide Israeli responsibility and the qualifier “Hamas-run” to cast doubt on figures that are widely corroborated by the UN, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and B’Tselem. Most of those killed are women and children, yet the BBC omits this entirely—dehumanising victims and denying the public essential context on the scale and nature of the violence.

This is not a conflict of equals—it is a genocide, as defined under the UN Genocide Convention and affirmed by the UN Special Rapporteur and hundreds of international legal scholars. I demand a public correction, acknowledgment of editorial failings, and a commitment to accurate, balanced reporting that reflects the human cost and legal reality of what is unfolding in Gaza.
