BBC Request to retract false identification of slain journalist
I am submitting this complaint regarding the BBC’s 10 August broadcast coverage of the killing of 5 journalists including Anas al-Sharif. The report repeated the Israeli military’s claim that he was a “Hamas operative” without verification, despite authoritative sources, including the Committee to Protect Journalists, confirming no such affiliation. This is a breach of:
Ofcom Broadcasting Code 5.1 – due accuracy and due impartiality in news.
Rule 2.2 – materially misleading the audience.
Rule 3.2 – material likely to encourage or incite crime or disorder, by legitimising unlawful targeting of journalists.
BBC Editorial Guidelines (Accuracy 3.2.1, War Conflict and Terror 11.3.5) require that official claims—especially from parties to a conflict—are challenged, contextualised, and not presented as fact without verification. Your report omitted the documented pattern of false identifications by the Israeli military, an omission that distorts public understanding.
By parroting the killers’ narrative, the BBC contributed to reputational harm, dehumanisation of a murdered journalist, and erosion of trust in the BBC’s impartiality. Such reporting risks justifying war crimes and fails to meet the due care required in coverage of armed conflict.
I request a full retraction of the unverified claim, a public correction acknowledging the CPJ’s findings, and incorporation of the historical context of repeated false IDF allegations in all future reporting.
