General BBC Complaint - Gaza Coverage
I’m writing to express my concern about the recent coverage of the BBC of the coverage of events in Israel and Palestine. It is important for the BBC to uphold its obligations under Sections 2 and 5 of the Broadcasting Code, which call for adequate protection of the public from harmful material and for accuracy and impartiality in news reporting. The broadcaster has been criticized for failing to provide a balanced perspective, particularly in its framing of the conflict.
Some of the most constant issues regarding coverage have been regarding the headlines and the tone in which Palestinians are described, some of which have had to be altered for being misleading or unacceptable, causing public outrage. The last of these is ‘Gaza man with Down’s syndrome dies lonely death’ which was then changed to ‘Gaza man with Down’s syndrome attacked by IDF dog and left to die, mother tells BBC’ without a public apology.
Other issues cited include the failure to acknowledge the historical context of the Israeli occupation and the systemic oppression and inequalities faced by Palestinians. The latest being the ICJ’s acknowledgement of systems of apartheid put in place by Israel against Palestinians. There are also allegations of biased reporting, with emphasis on Israeli casualties while downplaying Palestinian losses. Furthermore, questions have been raised about the veracity of certain reports and the sources relied upon by the BBC, as IDF statements are reported as fact, without adequate fact-checks or critic by the publication, despite numerous cases of falsehoods, misleading statements and disinformation given by Israeli officials and the IDF, including some of which that have been found by BBC’s own verification processes.
To address these concerns, it is recommended that the BBC take a more neutral stance in its reporting, ensuring equal treatment of all parties involved. Providing comprehensive context, including discussions of Israeli actions and policies, is essential. Additionally, efforts should be made to include diverse voices in reporting, particularly from Palestinian perspectives. Readers rely on BBC for transparency and accurate reporting, and BBC is falling short on these.
To provide a more balanced portrayal of the conflict, consistent representation by authentic representatives of the Palestinian community are suggested. Another suggestion is to use the CFMM report on media bias in 2023-2024 (https://cfmm.org.uk/resources/publication/cfmm-report-media-bias-gaza-2023-24/]) as a resource for future reporting to avoid bias in favour of Israel. As it states in the report: “In the main, Palestinians should be reported on as human beings with full unalienable rights as enjoyed by all peoples.”. I am calling on BBC to ensure that this is reflected in your reporting from now on.
Thank you for your time and attention
