NBC obscures Israel’s role in Gaza’s manufactured famine

I am writing to express concern about NBC News’ article, “A baby boy dies as starvation spreads across Gaza.” While the report includes harrowing firsthand testimony, it fails to clearly attribute the root causes of mass starvation to Israel’s ongoing military siege.

The claim that Israel “lifted its blockade” in May but has “allowed only limited aid” misleads readers by suggesting a good-faith effort. In fact, aid agencies and UN officials have repeatedly confirmed that Israel is actively obstructing humanitarian access, and targeting civilians near food distribution sites. Over 1,000 Palestinians have reportedly been killed while seeking food. These are not incidental shortages—they are engineered conditions of famine under occupation.

By presenting Israel’s role as passive or bureaucratic, the article minimizes state responsibility and undermines journalistic standards of accuracy and accountability. This framing obscures the genocidal intent behind systematic starvation tactics.

I urge NBC News to issue a correction or clarification regarding the language used around the blockade and to report more transparently on how Israeli policy directly contributes to mass civilian suffering.
