Gaza-bound aid boat carrying Greta Thunberg and other activists diverted to Israel
Sky News obscures coverage of Israel’s hijacking of The Madleen
I am concerned about Sky News’ article “Gaza-bound aid boat carrying Greta Thunberg and other activists diverted to Israel.” The term “diverted” obscures the unlawful seizure of a UK-flagged humanitarian vessel in international waters. The Madleen, as a UK-registered ship, is sovereign UK territory under UNCLOS Article 92. Israeli forces boarded it forcibly, deploying chemical agents—acts breaching international law and UK sovereignty.
This reporting violates Sky News’ Editorial Guidelines:
Due impartiality and due accuracy (11): Omitting the vessel’s legal status and the violent nature of the boarding misleads the public. Failing to present facts about Israel’s conduct skews public understanding.
It also breaches OFCOM’s Broadcasting Code:
Due Impartiality (5.1): The lack of legal and historical context fails audiences.
Harm and Offence (2.2): Sanitising aggression risks normalising violations of international law.
The report omits video evidence, use of chemical agents, and Israel’s S13 unit—linked to deaths on the 2010 Mavi Marmara.
I urge Sky News to revise the headline and article to reflect the illegality of this act and the UK’s duty to respond. Journalism must clarify, not conceal, state violence.
