Sky News obscures illegality of Israel’s occupation in its coverage of genocide in Gaza
Sky News’ article “Netanyahu’s plan for Gaza risks dragging Israel into a conflict with no clear endpoint” by Alex Rossi frames Israel’s full military control of Gaza as a political and strategic issue, while erasing the binding legal reality that it constitutes an illegal occupation and, as confirmed by UN bodies and major human rights organisations, a genocide.
The article concedes Gaza is “considered under Israeli occupation” but omits that the International Court of Justice, UN Security Council, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and Palestinian human rights groups have documented Israel’s mass killing of civilians, destruction of infrastructure, starvation blockade, and forced displacement as meeting the legal definition of genocide under the 1948 Genocide Convention. By centring Israeli political manoeuvres and omitting Palestinian civilian realities, Sky News distorts the core nature of this atrocity.
Euphemisms such as “security control” and “long-term policing” obscure grave breaches of the Fourth Geneva Convention and Rome Statute, including collective punishment, unlawful annexation, and forcible transfer. This framing risks breaching Ofcom’s Broadcasting Code obligations for “due accuracy” and “due impartiality” in coverage of major political controversies and armed conflicts.
Sky News must issue a correction or follow-up explicitly addressing the ICJ’s genocide findings, the illegality of the occupation, and Palestinian civilian perspectives. Without this, Sky News enables the erasure and normalisation of crimes against humanity.
